J I Case Company has produced four-wheel-drive agricultural tractors since 1964. In 1984 however, the flagship of the Case fleet changed hands. Rising labor costs and larger farming operations spearheaded the need for a more efficient larger tractor. January 1984 marked the introduction of the largest four-wheel-drive tractor in the history of Case, the 4994, a 400-gross engine horsepower tractor, Figure 1. Sheer horsepower alone however, would not meet the requirements of today's farming operations. Case Engineering realized that tomorrows tractors must have sufficient power to handle the wide variety of attachments available. They also realized that along with the unmatched power must come precise control of the attachment. These advancements in farming have required improvements to the tractor hydraulic system. This paper describes the hydraulic system of the 4994, Case's new flagship.

4H-SiC VJFET Based Normally-off Cascode Switches for 300°C Electronic Applications

Vertical-Junction-Field-Effect-Transistors (VJFETs) are currently the most mature SiC devices for high power/temperature switching. High-voltage VJFETs are typically designed normally-on to ensure voltage control operation at high current-gain. However, to exploit the high voltage/temperature capabilities of VJFETs in a normally-off high-current voltage-controlled switch, high-voltage normally-on and low-voltage normally-off VJFETs were connected in the cascode configuration. In this paper, we review the high temperature DC characteristics of VJFETs and 1200 V normally-off cascode switches. The measured parameter shifts in the 25°C to 300°C temperature range are in excellent agreement with theory, confirming fabrication of robust SiC VJFETs and cascode switches.

4WS Technology and the Prospects for Improvement of Vehicle Dynamics

FOUR-WHEEL STEERING (4WS) is beginning to find widespread use as a new approach to improving vehicle dynamics, especially in the medium and high speed ranges. Steering the rear wheels in the same phase as the front wheels enhances vehicle stability. Four-wheel steering systems have an even greater potential to improve stability and steering response through suitable control over the transient characteristics of the rear wheel steer angle. This paper traces the course of Nissan research and development work on four-wheel steering and the evolution of Nissan's HICAS (4WS) technology. It also describes research activities under way on vehicle dynamics using a newly developed Simulator Vehicle, equipped with a front and rear angle transient control system which makes it possible to vary the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle instantaneously and at will while driving.

Diesel common rail injectors are required to utilize a higher injection pressure and to achieve higher injection accuracy in order to meet increasingly severe emissions, less fuel consumption, and higher engine performance demand. In addition to those requirements, in conjunction with optimized nozzle geometry, a more rectangular injection rate and stable multiple injections with shorter intervals are required for further emissions and engine performance improvement by optimizing the combustion efficiency.

5.9 GHz DSRC Standards Overview and Status

Over the past several years the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association has developed standards for the 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications protocols, also known as Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments. These standards consist of IEEE 1609 as well as an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard or 802.11p. The 1609 standards were published for Trial Use and these as well as the 802.11p draft have been implemented in a variety of test beds to provide lessons learned and feedback into the standards working groups. Based on ongoing testing, the protocols display a strong capability to address the requirements of crash avoidance and transportation mobility applications. The corresponding test results provide information necessary to update the standards after the first trial phase as industry moves toward commercial implementations.

The Harnischfeger hydraulic hoe circuits are designed for fast digging cycles. The circuits have separate pump sections, control valves, cylinders, and motors. There is complete independence of action of all circuits in volume and pressure. The maximum horsepower that can be applied to any circuit is determined by the maximum volume of the pump section and relief setting. Forces that are applied to the structure are controlled by the area of the cylinders, the fixed volume of the motors, and the relief settings. The machine can fill the dipper at full digging depth, hoist to spoil pile height, swing 90deg, dump the load, and return to full depth in 17–22sec. The H312 5/8 yard machine can dig 2cu yd per minute.

50 Development of Measurement Method for Airborne Sound Emitted by Personal Watercraft

The personal watercrafts (PWC's) are operated in various ways; going around on certain course again and again, repeating acceleration and deceleration, or prolonged idling operation, for instance. The procedure of ISO 14509 has been applied in the traditional sound measurement for powered recreational craft. However, the standard is designed to measure the sound from the typical small crafts, on the assumption that they run straight in a constant speed. It is believed to be inappropriate to use this procedure for the measurement of PWC sound. In trying to establish the suitable procedure for PWC, evaluation by the auditory sense of 15 raters was carried out in parallel with the traditional sound pressure level measurement. As the candidate, four (4) measurement methods were employed in this test. 5 models of PWC's including modified crafts were used. Correlation between the results of traditional sound measurement and the auditory sense ratings was examined.

As a part of a program jointly supported by the USAF and Canada's Department of National Defense, BlueStar is developing large (50 to 100-Ah)lithium ion cells for aircraft and spacecraft applications. Presently, 20-Ah cells are being developed as the first stage of the scale-up process and the design of these cells involves several tradeoffs related to the specific nature of this application. This paper will present the design of this first generation cell in the context of these tradeoffs as well as presenting the results of the performance and life testing of these cells.

51 Examination on Measured Equivalent Sound Pressure Level and Sensory Evaluation for PWC Operating Sound

When evaluating the sound generated by PWC (personal water craft), it is essential to study the measurement method for the PWC sound itself. However, it is equally important to identify the influence on the people in the neighbor of shoreline by being exposed to the sound from a group of PWC running around on waters. Such influence can be grasped in relation to the results of sensory evaluation. LAeq (equivalent continuous A-weighted sound level) was measured on PWC's running in various patterns and different numbers, while sensory evaluation was performed to obtain the data for the feelings the exposed persons would have about the sound. In this way the correlation between the sound pressure level and its perception by the people were analyzed. LAeq is the mixture of natural sound at the test site and the sound from the PWC(s) running in the predetermined patterns.

In France, the current evolution in the number of road accident victims is less favourable for the moped rider category than for the majority of others. In addition, the proportion of scooters in the moped park is currently considerably increasing. The aim of the research work presented is to consider if an explanation for the bad results for this category of users, in terms of road safety, can be found through the study of the dynamic performances of this type of vehicle. We thus carried out an experiment aimed at comparing the dynamic capacities of a “Classic” moped with those of a “Scooter” model. Two mopeds, one of each type, were fitted with an embedded measurement system. They were driven for several tests on a track by a professional test pilot. The results of this study are more in favour of the “Scooter” moped, which seems to offer equivalent, or even better, dynamic capacities than the “Classic” one.

64 Ergonomic Approaches to Improved Scooter Riding Comfort

This paper gives a report on ergonomic approaches we tried to scooters for improvements in their riding comfort. First we conducted investigations into riding postures that offer a comfortable scooter ride. That is, we picked out major items for the evaluation of scooter riding postures and investigated a correlation between those items and their physical quantities. Our investigation revealed that room for leg and arm movements played a major role in a scooter riding posture. We further found out a high correlation between the evaluation items for legroom and the knee angles and also high correlation between the evaluation items for legroom and the ankle angle. Next we report on the result of the attempt we made at improved riding comfort by equipping the scooter seat with a backrest. To check the effects of backrest, we measured the seating pressure distribution, myogenic potential, and cardiogenic potential.

IMEP can be generally calculated by numerical integration on the PV diagram. However, this method requires a great number of sampled data per cycle, in order to ensure high accuracy in calculation. The present method is a to use only the primary and secondary components of engine speed from the pressure diagram based on the Fourier series. Owing to this method, calculation errors have become smaller than conventional method even though the number of samples is reduced, and calculation time is also reduced by the conventional method. Using present method, a Fourier series type combustion analyzing system has been developed. Real-time IMEP measurement is allowed in this system owing to the characteristic features described above, and the validity of calculated results is confirmed by comparing the results with the IMEP values obtained by batch processing through the numerical integration.

The experimental procedure employed to define the natural modes of vibration of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Space Shuttle Orbiter mated configuration is described. A discussion of test results and comparison to structural analysis results is also included. Random transient signals were used as inputs to electromagnetic shakers to provide excitation to the mated vehicle test configuration. Acceleration signals were processed via the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. Magnitude and phase transfer functions were formed and processed to produce modal frequencies, damping, and modal displacements.

The 757/767 Flight Management System provides the initial operational implementation of an integrated guidance, control and display equipments based upon digital technology for commercial transport airplanes. The applied equipments are based upon the new ARINC 700 series characteristics developed by the Industry over the past five years. These characteristics were developed on the basis of limited operational experience with selected elements of the system and upon R&D efforts within the Industry. The System features automatic/manual flight profiles for optimum economics, all weather landing including rollout guidance, electronic primary flight instruments based on color (shadow mask) CRTs, inertial attitude/velocity reference based upon laser gyros, improved caution/warning and other improved performance/functional features. The system also provides significant improvements in line and shop maintenance features.

78 Development of a combustion analyzer to load onto a motorcycle

In many cases of the development of motorcycle engines, the combustion analysis has been of the engine in laboratory, not of the one onto actual motorcycles. It is mainly because the combustion analyzer in the market is too large to load onto a motorcycle. Pressure sensor, crank angle detector, arithmetic unit and data record device are necessary to analyze the combustion. The arithmetic unit is to process detected signals and generally needs the largest space among them. Needless to say, more reliable results of the combustion analysis could not be obtained under such limited experimental conditions. Therefore, we developed a compact combustion analyzer, which is possible to be loaded onto a motorcycle. The width of the arithmetic unit is 91mm, the depth 98mm and the thickness 20mm. The core chip has the calculation ability of 78MIPS at a clock speed 60MHz, and it has AD converter, DA converter and high-speed counter.

8 A Study of the Influence of Fuel Temperature on Emission Characteristics and Engine Performance of Compression Ignition Engine

In this study, the heated fuels were provided to the diesel engine in order to activate the fuel before the injection. Two test fuels: the normal diesel fuel and cetane, which have different boiling points were used. For both normal diesel fuel and cetane, crank angles at ignition and maximum pressure are delayed and the maximum combustion pressure is decreased as the fuel temperature rises. In cases of large and middle mass flow rate of fuel injection, the brake thermal efficiency and brake mean effective pressure are decreased when the fuel temperature is higher than 570 [K]. However, in the case of small mass flow rate of fuel injection, the brake thermal efficiency is almost independent of fuel temperature. HC and CO concentrations in the exhaust gas emission show constant values regardless of fuel temperature. However, NOx concentration is gradually decreased as the fuel temperature rises.
